Environmental Outreach

Did YOU know that Hwa Chong’s got its very own thrift shop? Or that it has a lovely little garden, with lots of butterflies? Well, now you do!

These fixtures come under the jurisdiction of Hwa Chong’s Green Council (GC), where we aim to create a culture of environmentalism within our Hwa Chong community!

Our Thrift Shop collects second-hand products like uniforms, school-related shirts, water bottles and other cool items from our students & seniors, giving them a new life! We provide most items for free upon request, making them affordable and accessible to our student population. This aims to create a culture of reducing waste or unnecessary consumption, shaping a more sustainable Hwa Chong.

In addition, our Butterfly Garden (located near the Block B consultation area) gives students a place to unwind, but also serves as an avenue for students to immerse themselves in the rich biodiversity of our school. We plant butterfly-(and other pollinators)-attracting plants, and are currently also exploring incorporating edible plants such as herbs and fruiting species. By encouraging close interactions between students and the different plant and insect species in our garden, we hope to encourage a love for the world around us among students!

Annually, we organise two flagship events, namely Earth Week and Green Conference. During Earth Week, various school-wide activities are conducted to engage and educate the school population about significant environmental issues and to equip them with the knowledge and skills to make a meaningful change.

As for GreenCon, we invite students from across Singapore to convene, participating in sustainability related discussions and activities. Our mission is to inspire green advocates and future environmental leaders to drive change within their own communities and respective schools, also creating a platform and community of support for individuals who share similar goals to learn from and inspire one another.

Most importantly, GC sparks change by drafting school policies with the management, that make our school more in tandem with the environment. Upcoming initiatives and policies include: Founder’s Day Tree Planting, Recycling Competitions, Composting and Everyday Advocates. By customising our policies to students' needs, GC makes sure that daily life in Hwa Chong can be as enjoyable as it is environmentally friendly.

Look forward to GC’s activities for you during Orientation! For more info, you can check out our Instagram @hc_greencouncil, and also take a look at our section on CCAC’s page!
